Hamilton leads the fields despite early entry to the gravel. The young McLaren driver out pace David Coulthard eventhough he was on grooved tyres, whereas Coulthard was on 2009 experimental non-groove slick tyres.
The recently-wed Felipe Massa led the way for Ferrari, as he outpaced newly-crowned world champion Kimi Raikkonen for third spot. Michael Schumacher is scheduled to take over from Raikkonen on Thursday.
Testing continues at Jerez until Friday.
